Your Fall Healthy Hair Routine

Care for your hair through this beautiful crisp weather.

Crisp air, hats, (light) scarves AND pumpkins? There’s nothing better.

That said, there’s a tendency to put the health of your hair on the backburner as the weather shifts into these colder, drier months. While you might be thriving, your hair might be feeling a little dull and parched.

If you’ve noticed a change in your hair already, you aren’t imagining things! Weather, climate and other environmental factors make a huge difference in whether your hair is nourished and supple, or brittle and dry.

The reality is that your hair has seasonality, just as much as your wardrobe - which means that it’s time to break out the fall products and routine! So, grab your favorite pumpkin-y drink of choice, and snuggle on in - I’ve got a few (fine, several) tips to help you obtain healthy, nourished hair this fall 🍂

At Home

Believe it or not, those cute fall outfits you’ve been planning can actually have a major effect on the health of your hair! Does that mean you should change out your wardrobe? Absolutely not. Unless you’re looking for an excuse to do so… in which case, yes? 😏

In all seriousness, your hair can and will rub against scarves and high neck sweaters, which will cause tangles. You can combat this by throwing a wet brush in your purse, and using extra serum or dry conditioner in the morning, and before you brush out your hair to prevent damage.

In the summer, we combat damage from the sun, and build up from pool, ocean and lake water with a good clarifying shampoo. In the fall, those clarifying products aren’t nearly as necessary!

But, if you’re like me and prefer to wait awhile between your washes, you may want to keep your clarifying shampoo in the shower and use it once before each wash. Take a pump of your clarifying shampoo and a pump of your regular shampoo at the same time - this will help to remove product (and dry shampoo) build up, without being too drying.

In the Salon

Really, you should allow yourself to be pampered every once in a while. It’s delightful, especially when you know that the pampering you’re receiving is actually benefiting the health of your hair in the long run 💁‍♀️

So, here are a few ways you can pamper yourself AND your hair during your next fall or winter appointment!

  1. Add a hard water treatment to your haircut or color. This will help to clear out all of the minerals that have collected in your hair from this summer’s pool and ocean activities. It’s also a great way to hit the reset button on your scalp!

  2. Add a clear gloss to amp up the shine of your hair. Take it up a notch and enrich your existing color with a gold or copper tinted gloss!

  3. Once a season, plan to do a trim and treatment to replenish those ends. This is important all year round, but it’s especially important as we transition from warm months, to brisk, colder weather.

For Your Products

If you’re all about fully embracing fall palettes and colors and would like to incorporate more honey and copper tones in your hair, set aside that purple and blue shampoo! Those are used to counteract the tones you’d like to achieve, and can result in a muddy, neutral or dull color.

In the cooler months, we don’t need to shampoo as often, because we sweat less, and produce far fewer oils. Because we wash less, we have the tendency to heat style more - so make sure you’re using a good heat protectant!

If you found that you were washing your hair fairly frequently over the summer, and want to extend the time between washes in fall and winter, don’t forget to add an amazing dry shampoo to your arsenal! I swear by Unite’s U:dry for medium to lightly oily hair, or Redken’s Deep Clean for hair that gets especially oily.

Really, fall is an excuse to get cozy, try new products, and book a good pampering session. And I’m all for it 👏
