Managing Postpartum Hair Loss
I recently had the opportunity to chat with a beautiful new mother about her concerns and experience with postpartum hair loss. During our conversation, I realized something: postpartum hair loss is a topic that so many women want and need to learn more about, yet there’s such limited information and education available.
So, I’d love to provide just a couple of thoughts about how to manage postpartum hair loss, from the perspective of a hairstylist. A hairstylist who has been privileged to wash, cut and style the hair of plenty of new mommas, all of whom have experienced different stages of postpartum hair loss and shedding.
So, without further ado, here are some tips and thoughts on how to manage postpartum hair loss from a hairstylist.
How to Manage Postpartum Hair Loss
First things first? I want you to remember that postpartum hair loss is completely normal and common. It typically occurs around 3-4 months after birth, and stops between 6-10 months. I’ve never seen it go past a year on any of my clients!
Postpartum hair loss typically occurs in the front of the hairline, along the temples. To combat said hair loss, I’ve heard success stories from my own clients who have continued to take prenatals during the typical postpartum hair loss time frame. Some other things that are always good for your hair and its regrowth are biotin and collagen (just make sure they’re safe for breastfeeding).
There are also some topical products you might want to use, like Initialiste Scalp & Hair Serum from Kerastase. While this wasn’t necessarily created for postpartum hair loss, if it’s approved by your doctor, it couldn’t hurt to try!
While I know this probably isn’t the answer you’re wanting or looking for, I do want to remind you that your hair will balance back out. During your postpartum hair cut, try adding some face-framing layers so that when the shorter pieces regrow, they look a little more purposeful. It’s just a bit of a waiting game, but the great news is that shaggier, layered and face-framing styles are in! So why not give them a shot, right?
And last but not least, remember that you’re beautiful, and you pretty much created and survived a miracle. Your postpartum hair shedding and regrowth are just a sign of that - wear it like a badge of honor ✨
