How to Protect Your Hair This Summer

Let your hair thrive, even through the warm summer months!

Over the years, we’ve all learned just how important it is to protect our skin from the sun’s harsh rays. It’s practically a given that unless it’s nighttime, it’s sunscreen time.

But what about your hair?

Believe it or not, your hair is just as susceptible to damage from the sun and intense heat. Before you start sighing (because really, another concern to add to the list is just unneeded right now), rest assured that protecting your hair, its color and health can be a simple and painless process.

I’ve got 9 tips to share with you today to help you protect your hair this summer, so you can go on and enjoy the sun, sea and sand ☀️

1. Use SPF in your hair. If you didn’t know that hair-specific SPF had even been invented, you’re not alone. You can easily incorporate hair products that are loaded with SPF to help keep you protected from UVA and UVB rays in your daily routine. Any product in the 7 Seconds line will give you all of the UVB and UVA protection you need, while also nourishing and targeting your specific hair concerns.

2. Don’t neglect your part! That thin line where you part your hair is the most susceptible to a painful sunburn. I’ve always dealt with oily hair from applying sunscreen to my part, but with the recent creation of powder sunscreens, you can easily dust the powder along your partline, and be free of oil and sun damage. I love the Supergoop Mineral Powder - it’s super easy to apply, mess-free, and a great product to pack.

3. Keep a good deep conditioning mask in your shower. It always helps to have a visual reminder to incorporate a hair mask in your weekly routine - keeping one in your shower will help you to remember to apply it! Between the sun, sweat, swimming and running around, our hair tends to be extra dry in the summer months.

4. Clarify your hair regularly. Ideally, every few shampoos! If you’re in the pool or ocean often this year, make sure to incorporate a clarifying shampoo into your routine every few washes, and pair it with a deep conditioning mask to help restore your hair’s moisture and health. If you have an upcoming salon appointment planned, we can always add a clarifying hard water treatment to your visit to help remove any build up.

5. Use a good shower filter. Speaking of build up from hard water, I can’t emphasize enough just how important it is to implement a good shower filter in your hair care routine. Your hair will take a beating in the summer months, and in my personal experience, washing my hair with a shower filter helped me preserve my hair, and minimize breakage. I recently moved into a new place, and took my sweet time in setting up my shower filter in my space. After a while, I noticed that my ends started to break on the side that I slept on, and not just by a little - by a few inches. To top that off, the underside of my hair (the uncolored, virgin hair), started breaking as well. What can we take away from that? Well, San Jose water is no joke… and your shower filter can help.

6. Choose extension-safe sunscreen. Trust me… don’t make the same mistakes that I did. I learned my lesson the hard way when my blonde extensions turned a lovely peachy-orange color from a sunscreen product I had applied to my body. Protect your hair investment, and be sure to read the ingredients in your sunscreen! Mineral-based products will typically be your safest bet. Try to avoid products with Avebenzone and Octocrylene.

7. Here’s a silly one: don’t forget to brush your hair while you’re out adventuring. Even if you’ve had your hair up in a bun or ponytail for a few days, add a bit of serum and brush it out in between. Your hair (and sanity) will thank you when you’re no longer forced to rip through week-old knots!

8. Increase your wash schedule (with a caveat). Yes I know, this is completely and utterly opposite my typical mentality… and for a good reason. I want you to increase your wash schedule this summer, but only if you’re a swimmer, enjoying multiple lake days, surfing, kayaking or taking part in any regular water activities. We never want to let that damaging water sit in your hair for too long - try to increase your washes to make sure you’re always washing out salt, hard or chlorinated water immediately. You’ll also want to increase the moisture in your products. Summer is the time to put away the volumizing shampoo and conditioner, and pick up a moisturizing set of products. I love the 7 Seconds line for deeply hydrating, fuss-free nourishment.

9. Wet your hair before getting in the pool or ocean. If you’ve known me for a while, you’ve probably heard this one before! Your hair acts like a sponge and will pick up most of what you put in first. So, just be sure to give your hair its initial drink of fresh and clean water before dunking your head in salt or chlorine.
